Barbara Haworth-Attard has written several books for young people. She writes historical, fantasy and contemporary novels. In 2003 she was nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Theories of Relativity. She was also shortlisted for the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction and the Mr. Christie’s Book Award for Home Child, a story of thirteen-year-old boy who was a “home child,” sent from poverty in England to the Canadian prairies as a labourer.
The idea to write about the Overlanders came by accident as she was doing research for another book. What drew her to the story was how ordinary people were thrust into such a difficult situation and how they survived and rose to the challenges that confronted them.
Barbara lives in London, Ontario.
