Amy Phair's world fell apart when her mother died. Her baby sister was taken away, and now Gramma Davis keeps her busy cooking and cleaning for three young brothers and a neglectful father. It isn't fair... but Amy promised her mama she'd watch over them all.

Excerpt from AMY'S PROMISE
by Bernice Thurman Hunter

It was quiet in the house for some time after the doctor's visit. Even the boys were subdued, and Amy didn't hurry home from school.

"I wish I lived at your house, Winnie." Amy took off her woolen tam to let the warm spring breeze blow through her straight brown hair. "And I wish you were my sister." They stopped to let Harry catch up.

"Well, I haven't got a sister either, Amy," consoled Winnie.

"No, but you've got a cat and a baby."

"Well, the cat's okay but a baby brother can be a terrible nuisance sometimes."

"Huh!" scoffed Amy, giving Harry a playful cuff in the head. "Don't tell me about brothers."

"Have you got a picture of your baby sister, Amy?"

"No. And she's not a baby anymore. She's six years old now."

They slowed their steps as they got closer to the purple house, and young Harry ran on ahead.

Suddenly Amy's eyes lit up. "I've got a swell idea," she said. "I'm going to write my Aunt Bessie and ask her for a picture of Janey. And then, as soon as Janey is old enough to read, I'll write to her myself." They stopped on the sidewalk in front of the purple house and continued talking.

"Will you show me the picture as soon as you get it, Amy?"

"Of course, Winnie. You'll be the first person to see it."

Out of the corner of her eye Amy noticed the curtain in the parlour window move and she saw Gramma Davis squinting through the glass.

"I have to go in now, Winnie. I'll see you tomorrow."
