Excerpt from CANADIAN DISASTERS
by René Schmidt

When the sky grew dark with clouds at suppertime, people were worried only about high winds and hail. Some were concerned about lightning causing a power failure and the annoyance of a cold supper. Instead there came a noise like a locomotive and the tornado’s winds were upon them.

When the kilometer-wide tornado hit the park, eyewitnesses didn’t see a funnel cloud. It was so big that it was suddenly all around them. They saw cars and trailers being flipped, spun and lifted by the vicious winds. In one car a three-month-old baby was pulled from her car seat and sucked out the window.

Oliver Mahoney watched helplessly as a man and his two-year-old child were violently pulled from another car. Moments later Oliver and his family prayed and hung on while their trailer was flipped and tossed like a cardboard box. Luckily the Mahoneys suffered only minor injuries.

Boats from the campground were driven across the lake by the wind, and one aluminum boat was wrapped around a tree. More than forty trailers and cars were tossed into the water. At the same time, fish from the lake were lifted by the swirling vortex and scattered over the campground.
