Cloning Miranda
by Carol Matas
Thirteen-year-old Miranda has it all. She's the bright, beautiful, only child of wealthy parents. She's even landed the leading role in her dance recital. But suddenly, during a rehersal, her vision goes blurry: she quickly learns that she has a rare and deadly disease.

Now her parents are acting strangely: the clinic they take her to is an eerie, private one, and nothing seems to add up. Miranda has the feeling that everyone has something to hide. She has enough clues — half-heard comments, a photo of herself she can't place. But it takes persistent coaching from her adventurous best friend Emma before Miranda uncovers the truth.

Excerpt from CLONING MIRANDA
by Carol Matas

I flip through the pictures: me in front of the tower of London, me in front of the British Museum. A loose photo drops out. I pick it up. Me in front of . . . that's odd. I look closer at the picture. How did that get in here? It's me all right, in front of some big castle, but it couldn't be from the London trip. I look about ten years old. And where was it taken? Funny. I can't remember being there at all. And those clothes. Ugh. Did I really like to dress like that? Overalls? I don't remember ever owning a pair of overalls, even at that age.

I take the picture out and put it in my dressing-gown pocket so I can ask Mother about it in the morning. I look at my watch. It's 1 A.M. I turn the TV on quietly so no one will hear it — not that they would, if they stay in their rooms. I flip around until I find an old John Travolta movie.
******

My body is inside out, blood vessels, muscles, red and white, and everywhere are large black growths, they multiply, they expand, they are covering everything. I start to scream but where is my voice coming from? Where am I? Where am I?

******

I wake up gasping. I get up and stagger back to my room. I'm pouring sweat, but I'm cold too. I head for my bathroom, and stand under the hot water, letting it wash over me, my mind, finally, a blank. Warmed through, I towel off and crawl under the sheets. I'm afraid to dream again and I can't fall asleep for ages.

"The book is a awesome novel . . . I am in love with it so far. The date is May 9/2005 — this is when I rented it from my school library . . . Oh I have to tell the maker of the cool book something: please if you can make more of the Cloning Miranda books!! I just LOVE them!! Thank you for making the books. I will be waiting for the new ones!!!"

"I think that this is an AWESOME book!!! Carol Matas has done a phenomenal job! As I was reading the novel Cloning Miranda, the description and excitement in this novel was so great that at times I felt as though I was Miranda in the story. I am not someone who is a fan of reading a lot, but the story Cloning Miranda had grabbed my attention in a way that no other story has before! Something about this story that I absolutely love is the fact that Miranda is a dancer. Since I have been dancing for almost seven years now, I can completely relate to the stage fright, the performing on stage and all of the other dancing sections in the novel. I have read the story two times (now on my third), and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an interesting, mysterious, yet touching book to read. I would have to say that Cloning Miranda is definitely one of my favourite books!"

"I loved this book. I had to keep on reading it till I finished. I suspected that she was a clone."

"This week I’ve been reading Cloning Miranda by Carol Matas. I absolutely loved this book because it had so many different flavours in it. For example, it was sad, happy, scary, exciting, different, weird, and very, very interesting! I think the main reason I found this book so interesting was because it is unlike anything I’ve ever read and because it was so suspenseful. Since I had never read about something even remotely close to cloning I just could'nt put it down. I think another reason was because it was so suspenseful and I wanted to know what would happen next so I couldn’t stop reading if I didn’t know what would happen to the characters."

"I thought this book is an awesome book! I couldn't stop reading it! Right now I am reading The Dark Clone and I can't wait to see what will happen next. I hope that Carol Matas will continue writing more sequels to these books."

"This book was a very interesting book. It makes a lot of people realize that they should be thankful of what they have and not want to be anything more than themselves."
