The parlor door opened and Evette came in. She headed toward our dollhouse, not
noticing Sophie.
"Hello, my friends," she told us.
"Dolls are your only friends around here," said Sophie. She hid the letter behind her back.
Evette whirled around. "Sophie! I'm sorry—I didn't see you. I'll come back later." She turned to leave.
"A letter came from your relative today," Sophie said quickly.
Evette stopped in surprise. "How do you know?"
"I have my ways," said Sophie.
Meddling ways, said Maman.
"Where is it?" asked Evette.
Sophie just smirked.
"Tell me!" demanded Evette.
At that moment, I heard the schoolmistress's heels clicking across the marble floor outside the parlor.
Sophie shoved Evette. At the same time, I saw her secretly slide the letter into the pocket of Evette's dress.
"What are you doing?" Evette yelled, startled. She pushed Sophie back, then fell against our dollhouse, knocking it off the table.
Look out! I shouted.
