With a scope that goes far beyone TV's "ER", this book details every aspect of medical emergencies. Readers will witness rescues by paramedics and go behind the scenes to see doctors, nurses, and technicians hard at work saving lives. With an innovative and lively format, each page is packed with photos that illustrate the tools, from suture kits to lasers; the vehicles, including helicopters and resue trucks; and the gear, from biohazard suits to the "jaws of life."

Excerpt from EMERGENCY!
by Joy Masoff

An operating room is a thrilling place to be - a real-life version of a life-or-death video game, a place where once wrong move can end up with a big flashing light that says GAME OVER. But this is no game. Somebody's life is on the line. Surgery is always exciting.

THE DEEPEST CUT

Sometimes, a patient need to be moved from the ER to the OR (short for Operating Room). There, surgeons cut open the skin to reach deep into the body. They might REMOVE parts that are infected, perhaps an inflamed appendix or tonsils. They might REPAIR a part that has been damaged, such as a heart valve. They might even REPLACE a part that no longer functions, such as a kidney.

Skin keeps germs out of our bodies. When the skin is cut, the protective barrier is broken. Microbes can creep in and cause infections. It is extremely important to keep everything as clean as possible. Surgeons must scrub every inch of every finger on each hand for over five minutes and pull on several layers of protective clothing.
