This entrancing story builds mystery and awe through the voice of a little girl whose father is a local conservation officer. Early one morning, a cougar is spotted in a restaurant parking lot. The stealthy animal crosses the lot, turns down an alley... and disappears. All day, the girl wonders where the cougar could be and if he will be safe from the cougar hunter and his hounds.
Later that night, an unusual visitor has been seen outside the famous Empress Hotel. By the time the girl arrives with her family, a large but quiet crowd has gathered. While her dad enters the parkade with his dart gun, she waits with her mother. Then a shot is heard! Soon her father returns with the tranquilized cougar and everyone gathers around, respectfully, to see. The next morning the girl goes with her father to the forest, where the cougar crosses a stream, walks through the trees... and vanishes.
Includes mysterious "hide-and-seek" illustrations, plus a large page of intriguing cougar facts.
