I Want To Go Home

Rudy Miller HATES camp. In his opinion, nothing would make Camp Algonkian Island more enjoyable than leaving it. Too bad the counsellors and Rudy's parents don't agree. So Rudy and his new friend Mike Webster decide to take things into their own hands. But every time they try to escape, something goes wrong with their plans. Soon the counsellors are on to them, and the only thing funnier than Rudy and Mike's wild escape attempts is their counsellors' efforts to foil them.

Excerpt from I WANT TO GO HOME
by Gordon Korman

"You don't suppose they'd try to swim to the mainland?" asked Chip anxiously. "Miller could probably do it, you know — there and back!"

"Let's hope not," said Frank grimly. "Because I doubt if Webster could. Anyway, I don't think we have to worry about that. I don't think Miller is that stupid."

"What if they get hurt or lost?" asked Chip nervously. "They're only kids!"

"Don't worry," soothed Frank. "It's not your fault."

"I don't care whose fault it is," exploded Chip. "They could get hurt!"

Suddenly the air was shattered by three short whistle blasts.

"The dock!" exclaimed Chip. He and Frank tore off towards the waterfront. Other counsellors were also running in the direction of the alarm.

Dave, the swimming coach, was standing on the dock gazing out over the lake through high-powered binoculars.

"A sailboat," he said, handing the binoculars to Frank. "Way out there, almost beyond our view. A little farther south and we wouldn't be able to see it at all. It looks like ours — the one that's missing. And there's two people in it."

"Miller!" shouted Chip, grabbing the field glasses and almost removing Frank's nose in the process. "You come back here!"

"The boats," ordered Frank, rubbing his nose gingerly. "Let's get after them!" He and Chip jumped into a speedboat and roared off. Six counsellors leaped into the main launch and followed. Four more boats, each carrying two counsellors, joined the chase.

Rudy leaned back and tapped the tiller with great satisfaction. "Ten more minutes should have us on the mainland."

Mike grinned happily. "It looks as if we're going to make it this time."

Rudy nodded his agreement. "And so we bid an unfond farewell to exotic Alcatraz Island." He turned towards Algonkian. "Oh — maybe not."

"What? What?" Mike stared in horror. From the island a wall of white water was starting out in their direction. "Boats!" he squeaked.

"Man the oars," said Rudy calmly.

"Oars?" squealed Mike hysterically. "They've got powerboats!"

"Yes, but we've got a head start." Rudy grabbed an oar and began to paddle on one side of the boat. "Now stroke."

Mike took the other oar and worked it madly. "We're doomed!"

"We are if we go around in circles," said Rudy. "Paddle on the stroke... stroke...
stroke... stroke..."

With their paddling assisting the sail, the small boat reached the mainland very quickly. By now the boys could hear the sound of the Algonkian Island armada coming after them. They could even see Chip in the lead boat, standing up and shaking his fist. They leaped out of their sailboat and scrambled up the grassy bank.

"What are we going to do? What are we going to do?" gibbered Mike.

"I don't know what you're going to do, but I'm going to run," replied Rudy. He took off through the woods.

"Wait for me!" shouted Mike, running after him.

Your Reviews

"I think that I Want To Go Home by Gordon Korman is an awesome book!"
Jose O., Age 11, Ontario, Rating: 9

"The story is pretty well written. It is about a boy named Rudy Miller who was sent to camp by his parents through the school counsellor's advice. Rudy hates camp, and so does Mike Webster, a new friend that he met in camp, and the only friend he has there. Together they attempt to escape the island by driving a boat. But every time they try, something goes wrong, the counsillors are on to them, and they think of many ways to escape. A great book, you may find it funny even if you are above the reading level."
Mark F., Age 9, Ontario, Rating: 9

"This book is awesome! It is easily the funniest book I've ever read. Rudy and Mike aren't half as funny as the counsellors. I must've read this book 5 or 6 times since I've had it. It's awesome."
Raechan B., Age 14, Rating: 10

"When my teacher read this book, everyone started laughing along. My class loved it and wants a sequel to it."
Alice S., Age 10, Ontario, Rating: 10

"I think the book I Want to Go Home was so awesome, I decided to read it again, and the second time I thought it was ever better! Right now I’m reading it for a book report, and I hope it will be even better this time!"
Michael L., Age 11, Nova Scotia, Rating: 10

"This is the best book I have ever read!"
Zachary D., Age 10, Quebec, Rating: 10

"This book rocks! It's the funniest, most interesting book I've ever read. Gordon Korman has such an imagination! I'm a writer myself and I wish to be just like him!"
Kelly G., Age 14, Quebec, Rating: 10
