Excerpt from LAURA: A CHILDHOOD TALE OF LAURA SECORD
by Maxine Trottier

At last the trees began to thin. The sun had dropped low in the sky and the first robins were singing their evening song. When darkness came she would be lost.

Her hands were cold and sweaty at the thought of the shadowy forest and what might be in it. Would wolves be out prowling when the sun went down?

Still, Laura went on. The ground became wet and soft. Cattails and mash marigolds appeared. Mud caked her legs and weighed down the tattered hem of her skirt.

When the moon rose and stars appeared, she stopped for a moment. Her pounding heart and ragged breathing drowned out all other sounds.

There ahead on a grassy rise was a shape. Laura ran towards it, then dropped down next to Peg, who lay motionless in the moonlight.
