Monsters in the School
by Martyn Godfrey
Illustrated by Susan Gardos

"Something's coming...!"

Spruce Grove School is spooky after dark, but Selby just has to get into the principal's office. It's all part of the big plan to make her family listen to her for a change.

Selby and her friend Eric know there's really no such thing as monsters. So how come there's a light on in the boiler room? And what's that noise?

“Humorous, fast-paced, and realistic.” — Canadian Literature

“A fun-filled read.” — Canadian Materials

"ARRGGHH!" I screamed.

The Grats stopped. The two dark shapes looked at us. Neither one moved. Maybe they were thinking of the best way to eat us.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Eric pull something off the wall. When I turned around he was holding the fire extinguisher.

"I saw this in a movie," he told me.

Then he began to spray foamy stuff over the office monster. The Grat made an awful, growly sound as the foarm hit it in the face. Then it fell backward. It landed with a thud on the floor.

"Whoopee!" Eric shouted.

I can be just as brave, I thought. I can fight back too.

I ran to the baked goods. The other Grat stopped at the far end of the tables. It didn't charge at me. Maybe it was surprised that Eric sprayed its friend.

I picked up an apple pie and flung it at the monster. It landed in the middle of its chest: tha-dump.

"Hey, what the..." the Grat cried.

I never knew monsters could talk.
