More Minds
by Carol Matas & Perry Nodelman

Princess Lenora of Gepeth is curious and daring - dangerous qualities when your powers make whatever you imagine become real. Prince Coren of Andilla is sensible and cautious - limiting traits when you have the ability to read other people's thoughts. When a giant attacks the north countries, Lenora rushes off to the challenge and creates a double to leave behind. By the time Coren catches up with her, he has a double of his own.

Meanwhile, the Balance, which keeps their world running smoothly, has gone completely haywire. Lenora and Coren must travel back to the past to mend the present and to pave a way for the future.

Excerpt from MORE MINDS
by Carol Matas & Perry Nodelman

Lenora gazed at herself in the mirror. She fixed her own image in her mind, both physically and mentally, then closed her eyes and gave a push of energy. When she opened her eyes, there were two people staring at the mirror, instead of one.

It was herself. There were two of her now.

As Lenora turned to look at the new her standing beside her, the new Lenora did the exact same thing. "This is odd, isn't it?" they both said at the same time. At exactly the same time - which was when Lenora realized that the other Lenora was exactly like her.

It was creepy. Very creepy.

And it meant that the other Lenora must have all her powers. Another mind, just like hers. What if the new Lenora tried to get rid of the original Lenora?

Oh, this hadn't been such a good idea after all!!

"I'm afraid you'll have to go," Lenora said. And she heard the words echo as she spoke them.

Terrified, she immediately thought her other self away - and for one horrible second, she felt herself actually flickering, on the verge of winking out her existence all together.

Then the moment passed, and her power surged through her, and she was alone again. She looked up to see just one Lenora looking back at her from the mirror.

As she stood there shaking with relief, she realized what a terrible mistake she had almost made. What if her wish - their wish - had worked, and both of them had actually managed to disappear each other? She'd be gone for good.

It had been a close call, all right. This was going to take some careful thinking. She had to create a Lenora that looked like her, talked like her, but didn't think like her.

How could a person talk like you, if they didn't think like you?

And then there was Coren. He could read minds, after all. If the new Lenora didn't think like the original one, then Coren would know it wasn't her right away, even if nobody else suspected.

Your Reviews

"I read this book a long time ago; honestly it was the best book I had read at the time. I wasn’t much into fantasy, and this made me really open up to that genre. It’s a wonderful story, and now that I’m talking about it, it makes me want to read it again!"
