Who's Got the Ball? Part II

When they weren't giving the appearance of carrying a football, the Carlisle players had other tricks up their sleeves - or elsewhere on their uniforms.

Once, in another game against Harvard, the Carlisle quarterback took the ball from center and shoved it under the back of the jersey of teammate Charlie Dillon. The fooled Harvard players chased the quarterback, while Dillon easily scored a touchdown. (The next year, the Rules Committee outlawed the trick.)

Carlisle wasn't the only team to employ this rule. In a play in an 1895 game against Vanderbilt Unversity, Auburn University's coach John Heisman (for whom the trophy for best college player is named) had his quarterback hide the football under his jersey. The quarterback was able to run fifty yards for a touchdown, while Vanderbilt players tried in vain to determine who had the ball.
