Excerpt from THE DARK CLONE

The phone rings and wakes me up. It’s Saturday morning and Emma is screaming into the receiver. Something about N. N?

“Emma, stop!” I exclaim. “What? I can’t understand you.”

“CNN!” she shouts.

“What about it?”

“CNN. Turn it on!”

I grab the clicker from the floor where I tossed it last night and turn on the TV. Ariel walks in as I do and exclaims, “Dr. Mullen!”

“Shshsh!” I put a hand on her shoulder and pull onto the bed.

Dr. Mullen is speaking.

“Yes, I repeat, I have created the first human clone.”

I stop breathing. Ariel lets out something between a gasp and a cry.

I whisper into the phone. “Has he said my name yet?”

“No, no,” Emma screams back. “Not yet. Quiet.”

I clutch the phone and listen. And stare. Underneath Dr. Mullen is a headline that in bold letters announces: Clinic in Belize.

“Belize?”

“Belize is a country situated in Central America,” Ariel states.

And then a thought strikes me. I’m probably still dreaming. That’s it! This is, of course, the nightmare I’ve feared ever since I found out that I was the first human clone. Discovery, CNN and all the rest camped out at my doorstep. School an impossibility. My friends looking at me like I’m some sort of – well, like what I am. Not quite human. Unable to protect Ariel from the media, unable to lead a normal life. I close my eyes and will myself to wake up.

“Did you hear that?”

I had tuned out. Why listen? It’s all a dream anyhow.

“No,” I say.

Emma is screaming into the phone again.

“It’s not you!”
