The Dragon Takes a Wife
by Walter Dean Myers
illustated by Fiona French

ONCE UPON A TIME, there lived a lonely dragon named Harry. Now Harry knew the rules: To get a wife, he had to prove his courage by fighting the knight in shining armor. But since Harry wasn't a good fighter, he always lost. And he lost badly.

Harry needed help. He turned to Mabel Mae Jones, one of the sweetest and kindest fairies in the kingdom of Lyraland. What he didn't know was that Mabel Mae's magic spells would backfire...with hilarious results.

Walter Dean Myers weaves a subtle message about self-esteem, and with his keen wit, he offers a new twist on the medieval tale of valor. First published in 1972, The Dragon Takes a Wife is given new life with the vibrantly coloured, stylized illustrations of Fiona French.

The next day he went to see Mabel Mae again.

"I give up," he said sadly. "I'll never get a wife."

"Don't feel bad, baby," said Mabel Mae. "My magic thing ain't working because you got your mind set on losing. You got that losing stuff in your system, and you can't move right. I'll have to teach you how to move."

"But I'm a dragon and you're a fairy," Harry said. "How can you teach me how to move?"
