The Second Clone
by Carol Matas

Miranda has survived a deadly disease, rescued her secret clone, and adopted the girl as a sister. Everything is perfect . . . for a while. But something very weird is going on. The clone is acting strange, and Miranda's parents don't even seem to notice.

Suddenly Miranda is living in a world of lies and suspicion, kidnappers and conspiracies, and asking herself: is this really my sister?

The gripping sequel to Cloning Miranda!

Excerpt from THE SECOND CLONE
by Carol Matas

I go into our room and find her sitting on her bed. When she sees me she gets a big bright smile that looks phony as anything and says, "Hello! Let's have some fun!"

"What did Dr. Mullen say to you?" I ask, suspicious of this put-on cheerfulness.

"He said that I must tell you that he is my doctor and all our talks are private."

So he's told her not to tell me anything, I think. Why?

"But you can talk to me," I coax. "I'm Miranda."

She looks confused, so I relent. I'd better not add to her confusion. It might make her worse. "Never mind," I say, "you just do what Dr. Mullen tells you."

She smiles. "I will be happy! Let's go have fun!"

"What do you want to do?"

"Have fun!"

I try to think. She's loved swimming ever since she came to live with us. Father, to his credit, spent a lot of time teaching her.

"A swim before dinner?" I suggest.

"Yes! A swim."

So we change into our suits, except I have to help her find hers as she seems to have forgotten where it might be, and we go out to the pool. I jump right in. It's cool and feels glorious. Ariel stands by the edge for a minute staring at me as I tread water.

"C'mon, jump!" I yell.

She jumps in after me, and proceeds to sink right to the bottom! When she surfaces she flails about and swallows water and is obviously in distress. I have to put my arms around her and pull her out.

"Are you crazy?" I pant once we are sitting by the side of the pool. "You have to swim!"

She looks terrified.

"Do I know how?"

I wipe the water out of my eyes and stare at her.

I don't care what Dr. Mullen says. Something is wrong.

"I was reading this book for school, but I'm reading it again forever. I was reading one of the suspenseful moments, and my heart just gets going really fast and my mom walks in and is wondering why my heart is beating so fast, and I'm like, it's the book, it's AWESOME."
Randi B., Age 11, Saskatchewan, Rating: 10
