When The Root Children Wake Up
retold by Audrey Wood
Paintings by Ned Bittinger

At winter's end when the sun shines bright and the earth begins to warm, the Root Children are hard at work underground, painting bugs and sewing their flowering costumes. Then, Mother Earth sends them out onto the land to frolic and dance in a colourful and exuberant masquerade. But alas, seasons change, and eventually the long summer days give way to brisk autumn winds that rip away their colourful flowering costumes. Now, Mother Earth calls them back to their underground beds to sleep - until spring returns once again.
